Training communities in sustainable farming

Changing weather patterns due to climate change have made subsistence farming much more challenging in the local area, and traditional farming methods have denuded the soil of nutrients. More and more families face hunger. To combat this threat, this project trains village communities in sustainable and regenerative farming methods. This is helping restore soil fertility, increase crops, improve food security and strengthen livelihoods.

So far, around 1500 members of our village savings groups have taken part in a two day training course. See what they learn below

The training has had a huge impact, as shown in the comments below

How it works

In Uganda, climate change is altering weather patterns and soil has become degraded by poor cultivation methods. Subsistence farming is becoming much harder, so most families in Budaka regularly experience food shortages.

To combat this, Just Small Change provides training in low cost, small scale regenerative farming methods to all the communities which host our VSLA groups. This training aims to restore soil integrity, reduce pests, increase crop yields and widen the variety of crops grown. This leads to better biodiversity, better nutrition and more income from crop sales.

Training covers crop rotation, the no-plough method of planting, mulching, irrigation management, use of natural fertilisers and composting. A demonstration garden is planted by participants, who see the results within six months, as there are two growing seasons per year. They go on to apply them in their own gardens.

Feedback in March 2025 was very positive, with participants harvesting much bigger crops and growing a wider variety of foods. Many are now able to sell some of their crops as well as feed their families a better diet.
